Rent movies at DePaul via generic red box

If you’re bored and want to watch a movie, but can’t find a Redbox or Blockbuster, and are upset by Netflix’s recent rate hike, you might want to swing on over to DePaul’s Student Center.

A little over a month ago, an ezDVD kiosk was installed on the first floor of the Student Center (2250 N. Sheffield Ave., building hours). According to the building’s information desk, one of the reasons the ambiguous red box was chosen is because it does not have exterior branding. Rentals are open to anyone, not just students, over the age of 18 who has a credit or debit card.

The box features various DVD titles, mostly newer releases, and a handful of video games for Xbox 360 and PS3.

Renting a movie or game is just like renting from the brand-name RedBox:

  1. Go to DePaul’s Student Center at 2250 N. Sheffield Ave. (Hint: Look for the building with a green statue of a monsignor with disproportionately large hands.)
  2. The kiosk is located on the north side of the first floor of the building.
  3. Click on “Rent” or “Purchase” to scroll through the selected titles. Rentals are $1 per day up to 17 days. Prices of DVDs vary.
  4. Select the title you want – you are allowed to rent up to three different titles.  Also, you can see the entire inventory of the DePaul kiosk here.
  5. Enter email address for email receipt (optional).
  6. Swipe a credit or debit card.
  7. Take your title.
  8. To return, click on “Return” on the kiosk’s touch screen and insert your rental. Returns within 10 minutes of a rental or purchase are not charged.

You can also register for ezDVD membership to make rentals easier, as well as putting an order on hold for later pickup.
